“Mendip Sunshine”
Thursday 25th September saw Cooper & Tanner conduct a complete dispersal of dairy cattle and farm machinery for Messrs R Chard & Son, Haydon Hut Farm, Wells.
Following weeks of heavy rain, it was pleasing to have the farm bathed in sunshine for the whole day and the large crowds which attended were relaxed and in good bidding mood for the varied lots on offer. First sold was the machinery and trade was very fast for the better quality equipment, tractors were in excellent demand with brisk bidding from local clients as well as strong interest from Ireland.
12 noon saw the 120 dairy cattle dairy cattle come under the auctioneers hammer. The farm situated some 800 feet above sea level saw the cattle to be very hardy. The herd was cubicle housed and managed on a very low input system by vendor Mr Tom Chard. An excellent number of buyers were forward all looking to acquire these genuine commercial cows which had potential to see greater yields on higher inputs. Purchasers came from a number of counties with a strong local support for this well known and respected family.
Many dams over £1300 with “Daybreak” sired heifers creating great interest producing a top price of £1600. In-calf cows had marvellous demand seeing a top price of £1470 for a “Mendip Forman” sired dam due with her 6th.
