“Sun Shines on Final Day”

Amid all the recent heavy rains it was good news for Cooper & Tanner auctioneers at Home Farm Compton Bassett Nr Calne Wilt where on Thursday 27th August they conducted a complete dispersal sale of farm machinery and furniture. The sale, held on behalf of Messrs J Heginbotham & Sons was the final chapter following the decision by John & Clive Heginbotham to retire from farming. The farm having been sold by Cooper & Tanner, it only remained for the auctioneers to disperse the many varied lots on offer. As the sun shone and the bell rang, auctioneer Trevor Rowland welcomed the huge crowd to the day’s events which would start in the field and end with a good run of Edwardian and Victorian style furniture some five hours later!

Bidding was wonderfully brisk all day and the many clients were quite happy to bask in the sunshine and mull-over times gone-by. “Sales of this nature have been far and few between in this area” commented one sale goer as he had, like so many enjoyed this tremendous social and business event.

Prices were excellent from start to finish with particular interest for the modern machinery and tractors. As well as a strong local interest, buyers attended from the Midlands, Wales, Devon and Cornwall. Phone bids were thick and fast coming from Scotland, Northern Ireland and Austria. “It was very satisfying to see such good demand and support on their final day, which is the end of an era for the Heginbotham family” said auctioneer Trevor Rowland. A large amount of the machinery stayed in the area and will continued to be used on local farms, the furniture sold very well to a big audience.
